Sherrill’s Restaurant, an iconic roadside diner-gas station tandem in Indiana, is known for its humorous sign.
But for one Fishkill counterpart, Flory’s Convenience and Deli, and thousands of other businesses across the country, filling up both bellies and tanks is no joke.
The New York Times recently included the family-owned shop in its round-up of gas stations and convenience stores that are taking advantage of a growing demand for fresh, healthy and easy-to-access grub -- and that are even giving fast food giants such as McDonald’s a run for their money.
Instead of having to settle for a stale sandwich or mummified hot dog, folks are now chowing down on goodies such as grilled fish, fresh salads, and Asian fare, The New York Times said.
Food trucks and carts are even parking next to gas stations in order to serve hungry travelers, The New York Times said.
Flory’s, located at 5 Schuyler Blvd. (off Route 9) in Fishkill, looks somewhat like a flashy 1950s casino when it's all lit up at night. It has more than a dozen Mobil gas pumps outside. Inside, its two-chef kitchen turns out everything from lasagna and chili to fried chicken, hot and cold sandwiches, and omelets.
According to its website, Flory’s also prides itself on having spotless bathrooms, competitive prices, and fast service.
It even has a make-your-own milkshake station and a plethora of coffee choices.
Flory’s has three other locations: Hopewell Junction, Mahopac, and East Fishkill.
